A Japanese Aesthetic

Todmorden, West Yorkshire

This design for a front and back garden of a terraced house on the steep south slope of the Calder valley with good views north from the front of the house. The back of the house is south facing backing on to a field which plateaus then rises steeply to a plantation of evergreen trees on its crest.

The client is very fond of Japan and Japanese culture so the garden was to have a Japanese aesthetic. The design looked to fulfill this and material choices were used to reference the surrounding Yorkshire landscape.

The back garden has two bespoke benches with timber seats set on found broken sections of York stone sink. The benches create destinations drawing you through the space. Backed off York stone walling, green slate paving and brown clay pavers were used to compliment each other and anchor the garden into it's surroundings.

The front garden also features a bespoke bench taking in views of the Calder Valley. It is an abstraction of an In-Yo symbol, follows the principles of Feng Shui and references the surrounding landscape through its components.
