A Finishing Touch

Rusholme, Manchester

We were asked to design a pergola to replace a previous shelter under a majestic Birch Tree at the back of this clients garden. Our initial concern was the proximity of the area to the tree. With that in mind we designed in a TRP from Core Landscape Products to provide support under the area while protecting the tree roots. This system allows oxygen and water to reach the roots while spreading the weight of whatever is put on top.

The design of the pergola allows light through as the client wanted to maximise light to the adjoining bed.

A small local sand stone wall denotes the area and raises the level to that of the back of the surrounding beds which mound up to the edge of the garden. The ground treatment was finished with reclaimed York stone flags laid in a fractal pattern and filled with gravel to allow water to permeate through to the fibrous roots of the Birch.
